2023: Study in South Africa Postgraduate Scholarship for African Students at Stellenbosch University

The 2022 Stellenbosch University Postgraduate Scholarship is still open for interested and qualified African-origin students who want to study in South Africa.

 

 

The Stellenbosch University Postgraduate Scholarship will grant support of up to $24,871 (ZAR 420,000) to chosen Master’s and PhD students starting their degrees at the university in 2023.

 

In addition to study fees and an allowance, the scholarship may cover research activities with your supervisor, such as a writing retreat, conference attendance, and publication costs up to $3,108.87 (ZAR52 500), based on an application for these funds filed during the study time.

Stellenbosch University’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is happy to offer a limited number of full-time PhD scholarships in partnership with the Gerda Henkel Foundation.

 

A limited number of full-time scholarships for Masters (full-ton) or PhD studies are available for purchase through the University of Maryland’s Department of Arts and Sciences.

Scholarship Duration and Benefits

MA and PhD Scholarships for “Turning the Tide”

PhD scholarships are available for R357 500.00 over three years. (In addition to study fees and an allowance, the scholarship may include research activities with your supervisor, such as a writing retreat, conference attendance, and publication costs up to R52 500, based on an application for these funds completed during the study time.)

MA scholarships: Up to R160 000 over a period of 18 months to two years. (In addition to study fees and an allowance, the scholarship may include research activities with your supervisor, such as a writing retreat, conference attendance, and publication costs up to R20 375, based on an application for these funds made during the study time.)

PhD scholarships are available for up to R420 000 over three years. Documentation Requirements

Candidates must be prepared to submit the following documents in order to apply;

 

Application Form

MA thesis for PhD applicants as an example of your writing

MA candidates’ honours research essays

Any academic articles connected to your application that have been published

A letter of motivation (no more than 600 words);

A 500-word pre-proposal (or research idea) explaining your intended research question. You should talk about how your research will add to the existing body of knowledge in this field, the issue statement, the technique / theoretical framework / philosophical foundations you plan to apply, and the feasibility of your study.

a verified copy of your entire academic record;

A certified copy of your MA degree certificate – or international equivalent (if you have finished the qualification but have not yet received the certificate, official verification from the university that the degree will be provided by March 2023);

A verified copy of your South African ID or international passport (if you are studying abroad).

In addition to this scholarship application, students must apply to study at Stellenbosch University. It is not necessary for applicants to be registered or to have a supervisor. Before submitting an application, they should inquire about the availability of suitable supervisors in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences in their specific field of research.​
